MOKHTAR

Directed by: Halima Ouardiri

In contemporary rural Morocco, the folk tale Mokhtar originated in the Souss Valley, the land of the Berber Imazighen. A young goatherd, Mokhtar, finds a baby owl fallen from a tree full of goats. That evening, he carries his treasure home, concealing it from his father, a skinny, surly, solitary peasant. But the boy soon runs up against his father’s ignorance, and the ensuing conflict leads him to languish in despair under the watchful, wizened eye of his hunchbacked mother, the helpless witness to this tragic, mysterious drama.
